<p>IKEA’s strategy has always been to not translate the names of their products. For example  the plant pot above is known as ‘Jättebra’ across the globe.</p>
<p>The strategy has been very effective in building the IKEA brand over the recent decades. However it is starting to create problems as the company moves deeper into international markets.</p>
<p>The Thai market has recently seen a great stirring of controversy surrounding the IKEA product names.  One of the IKEA beds sold in its store in Thailand was called ‘Redalen’.  – to speakers of English and other languages the name appears as, at most, quaint, but in Thai ‘Redalen’ sounds distinctly like the word for sexual intercourse.</p>
<p>This is not the only example of IKEA’s Swedish names sounding unfortunately like rude words in Thai. For instance the name of the plant pot above, ‘Jättebra’, despite its extremely innocuous appearance, sounds a great deal like a <em>very </em>dirty slang word for sex in Thai.</p>
<p>It’s true, as a member of the Ikea team said, that “the Swedish words are important because they bring a unique character to the brand. Even if the brand has spent years preparing its launch in Thailand these mistakes remain.  Some changes had already been made before the launch because some words sounded bad in Thai.”</p>
<p>It is essential for brands to be proactively aware of the potential for mistakes to be made in translating their products. This recent case with IKEA reminds us of Mistubishi’s branding blunder – the company realized too late that the name of their new car, Pajero, meant the equivalent of a ‘jerk off’ in Spain. The car was later renamed Montero.</p>
<p>It can’t be over emphasized how damaging these mistakes can be for a brand. Having said that, when brands get their branding and communications right in new international markets it can create huge opportunities. Consumers see poor translations as fundamentally foreign, and unfortunately this exacerbates campaigns that were already offensive. As a result of these perceived risks, however, those companies that are equipping themselves with the appropriate transcreation and marketing translation providers are in great stead to secure strong market position in the coming years of increasing globalization.</p>

<p>La stratégie principale du fournisseur mondial de mobilier, Ikea, a toujours été de ne pas traduire le nom de ses produits. Ainsi, lorsque vous rentrez dans un magasin Ikea vous pouvez acheter un  lit nommé « Brimnes » ou une chaise appelée « Alrik ».<strong></strong></p>
<p>Il est vrai qu’au premier abord les noms suédois des produits de la marque peuvent sembler   marrant ou incompréhensibles. Cependant, cela peut compromettre l’image de la marque suédoise à l’étranger.</p>
<p>En effet, la marque a récemment dû faire face quelques problèmes dus à la non traduction du nom de ses produits.  Un des modèles de lit vendus dans les magasins de la marque en Thaïlande nommé « Redalen » est une des sources des problèmes que rencontre la marque dans ce pays.</p>
<p>La prononciation du mot « Redalen » est en fait la même que celle d’un mot thaïlandais désignant un mot très vulgaire signifiant avoir une relation sexuelle.</p>
<p>Ce n’est ainsi pas l’unique exemple de mauvaise coïncidence en thaïlandais. Par exemple, le pot de fleur de la marque appelé « Jättebra » se prononce de la même façon que le mot sexe en thaïlandais.</p>
<p>Comme le souligne un des membres de la marque : « le nom suédois des produits est essentiel car il apporte un caractère unique à nos produits et à notre image de marque ».  Malgré tous les efforts  de recherche de la marque avant son implantation en Thaïlande, de nombreuses erreurs dominent. Ceci vient s’ajouter au fait que la marque suédoise, comme toutes les marques étrangères, ne sont que très peu bienvenue en Thaïlande.</p>
<p>Il est très important pour les marques de faire attention à la traduction de tous leurs supports de communication. En effet, l’exemple d’Ikea n’est pas sans rappeler celui de la marque Honda qui avait commercialisé une voiture appelée  « Fitta » dans les pays nordiques. « Fitta » est ainsi un des noms en argot en suédois et en danois servant à désigner l’organe génital féminin.</p>
<p>Les risques sont d’autant plus importants que la marque Ikea est présente dans plus de 40 pays à travers le monde. Ainsi, dans ces pays ils existent divers langages que seul un natif peut comprendre et traduire.</p>
<p>Ces problèmes de mauvaises traductions nous rappellent à quel point il est important de faire adapter son message publicitaire à l’international à l’aide d’un professionnel de la langue natif de la langue cible.</p>
